President’s Message (Dick McKellar)

“We Serve.” That is the Lions Club motto! On behalf of the Zionsville Lions Club, I would like to welcome you to our wonderful Zionsville Lions Club Park. Our Lions Club has been in existence since 1940 with the purchase of 7.97 acres and was founded on May 20, 1930 with 24 charter members. Today, we have 125 members and an 18.6 acre community park that broadly enhances the many activities in our community. We are committed to serve both local and international needs. Currently, on the local level, we begin each year with establishing our Partners in the Park fundraising campaign which began in 2005.  Since 1992, we have sponsored the EGGnormous Easter Egg Hunt, partnering with the Zionsville Times Sentinel.  Zionsville Little League Opening Day is held at our park in April as well. We financially support and work collaboratively over the many generations to serve the youth of our community.  During 2011, we hosted lunch for Boone Special Olympics Torch Run, our Park hosted Relay for Life, and coordinated events for Miss Indiana participants. Each Sunday evening in July, we have a wonderful free Concert Series that began in 1994.  Fall Festival, in September, is by far our largest event and folks come from across the state.  In October, we have a free Hayrides and Pumpkins event for our community. In November, we have a great time selling fresh fruit to raise funds for our high school student scholarship program. These are the main events for our Lions Club locally along with other events and opportunities served by our area service organizations. My vision of the coming year is to maintain and improve the quality and increase the interaction of our programs in our community, zone, district, state, national and Lions Club International. “Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest secular service organization with over 44,500 clubs and more than 1.4 million members in 203 countries around the world. Headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, United States, the organization strives to meet the needs of communities on a local and global scale.” Lions Clubs International was founded in the United States in 1917 by Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman.  My goals and objectives: Work on and improve the Present, Plan for the Future, with a Reflection on the Past. Let us have a responsible and enjoyable fellowship year with more Lions becoming really involved in service. That is the lifeblood of any organization; work on retention and increase membership by at least 5 plus with reimplementation of new member orientation, keep our Lions Club Park healthy and safe, add a number of park enhancements, broaden Partners in the Park and Friends of the Park, and start planning for 2012.  Let us lead with a Lions quote, “Working together for a better tomorrow”. As being a Hoosier Lion, we need to continue and increase our commitment to Cancer Control, Speech and Hearing, Leader Dog, Eye Bank, Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. As Past Lion International President, Al Brendel, has said and practiced “Lions do indeed perform miracles through service” and we do in a big way today and most hopefully tomorrow, and our new International President Eberhand Wirts charges us to “Move to Grow”. In conclusion, I am looking forward to working with our Officers and Board and each of our members, interested groups and individuals. “We Serve”!
